Active RFID systems, like passive RFID systems, are made up of readers, tags, and antennas; however, unlike passive RFID systems, active RFID systems use battery-powered RFID tags that do not require any energy from the reader to convey a signal.
As opposed to passive RFID tags, active RFID tags have longer read ranges and larger memory capacity since they have their own power source and transmitter that allows them to broadcast their signal. These performance capabilities, however, generate a higher demand for power in order to accomplish a significant read range and larger memory. Active RFID tags are often powered by a long-life battery that will last a few years before needing to be replaced.
